Helpful Tips for an Orthodontic Emergency
- Gently Secure: If a bracket is loose, try to gently secure it with orthodontic wax to avoid irritation to the soft tissues of the mouth.
- Do Not Attempt Repairs: Avoid trying to fix the bracket yourself. Schedule an appointment with your orthodontist as soon as possible.
- Gently reposition: If a wire is poking or has shifted, try to carefully push it back with a clean pair of tweezers or the end of a spoon to minimize contact with the oral tissues.
- Avoid pressure: Do not press or pull on the wire, as this could cause further damage.
- Use orthodontic wax: Apply orthodontic wax to the areas causing pain or irritation. This can help reduce direct contact between the appliances and the oral tissues.
- Mouth rinses: Use mild mouth rinses or saltwater solutions to alleviate inflammation and clean the affected area.
- Replace with new bands: If elastics are lost or damaged, temporarily replace them with new bands if you have them available. However, contact your orthodontist as soon as possible for a proper evaluation and replacement.
- Contact your orthodontist immediately: If your orthodontic appliance is damaged or completely dislodged in an accident, contact your orthodontist right away. In the meantime, avoid hard or sticky foods that could cause further damage.
- Cool the area: Applying a cool, clean cloth to the affected area can help reduce swelling and relieve pain.
- Soft diet: Stick to soft foods to minimize irritation and give the affected area time to heal.
